Lesson 4

Lesson 4: Prewriting Examination
EXAMINATION NUMBER: 50046800

Topic
When you think of a song you love, chances are you think of more than just its beat or melody. Because of your particular experiences, your reasons for loving the song may be different from the reasons of someone else who also loves the same song. Perhaps you have a particular memory associated with that song or it speaks to you personally. The lyrics of a song especially take on a different meaning from person to person. Think of a song you love. What words or phrases stand out to
you? Why? For this exam, you'll choose a song and analyze the lyrics of the song. Your analysis should focus primarily on the various literary devices the songwriter uses to convey the song's meaning, such as simile, metaphor, irony, personification, and symbolism. Use your analysis to determine what the appeal of the song is to its audience.

This essay requires you to use secondary sources to support your claims about the song's cultural impact, so you'll begin
your research and create a bibliography of relevant articles and reviews that you might include in your essay. Your annotated
bibliography should include a minimum of five sources. Please note that if you use any secondary source material in
your graphic organizer, you should follow MLA format and provide the appropriate parenthetical citations. To prepare an
