SJVW Final Paper
The purpose of this final assignment is to strengthen your understanding of a key social justice movement and then to apply your learning from that movement to potential change that you envision in your community. This is a 2 part assignment.
Part 1:
Research one social justice movement that has made significant historical impact either nationally or internationally (Labor movement, Women's Suffrage, Voting Rights, Abolition of Slavery, etc). You must have your social movement approved by the instructor. In part one of the assignment you will delve into the details of the movement. This section must include all of the following information:
1. Who were the key players in the movement?
2. What was the central focus of change that was being fought for?
3. What were the biggest obstacles that those in the movement encountered?
4. How were these obstacles overcome (or were they)?
5. What are the lasting impacts of this social movement please include systems and policy changes in this section.
Part 2:
The second part of the assignment is a chance to be creative. Please consider how the movement you are researching has directly impacted you and your community and include the following pieces in your essay:
1. How has your life been directly/indirectly impacted by the movement?
2. How do you envision that your life would be different if this social movement had not occurred?
3. How has your community been directly/indirectly impacted by the movement?
4. What else needs to happen in your community to continue the legacy of this social movement? Please consider policies that need to be put in place, institutions that need to be supported, ideas and voices that need to be uplifted.
This is an 8-10 page paper. It should be double spaced and use 12 point font. You must include a minimum of 6 academic sources (peer reviewed journals, .gov/.edu sites, primary sources, news articles). You must include a cover page, abstract, and reference page, these pages are not included in the final page length.
